The spoils found include housing structures, hooks, net weights and remains of marine and terrestrial fauna.
Everything indicates that it would be a fishing village dedicated to the seasonal exploitation of marine resources, in complementarity with agriculture and pastoralism, leading to an agro-maritime economy. Given the bad housing conditions and due to the strong winds and humidity that are felt in this place almost all year round, its function would be as an observatory of the sea,
Fishing and shellfish collection were not only the main source of food for the residents of this village, but the fish, after being salted and dried, would have a commercial destination, being used as a currency of exchange with other products from other regions of the interior, such as like cereal.
The village of Ponta do Castelo is the first fishing settlement from the Muslim period to be investigated in Portugal.
